This winter was very cold and snowly and I'm so happy that the spring is finally here..
I was very busy last few months solving some problems and working daily at the hospital.In December I moved with my girls and my ferrets from Varaždin Spa to the city Varaždin.Varaždin is one beautiful old city and we settled here very well.I will show you something more about Varaždin in my next posts but today only few spring photos from my sister's garden..

Old fortress Kalnik

One of these september days we made an outing to the old fortress Kalnik placed on the stone hill Vuklenec what is a part of the hill Kalnik.It's no far from my town,only a half hour by the car.

The first written sighn of the Old town of Kalnik dates back to the 1243,when king Bela IV mentioned its role in the battle against Tartars.The town,built on a steep cliff and sorrounded with defensive walls,was invicible for its attackers.Many rulers and noblemen held it as their property over centuries.

The walled town of Veliki Kalnik is a complex of buildings made in various stylistic periods.Its lower part,from the east,still shows the remains of St.Chaterine's Chapel.The very fortress was abandoned from the middle of 17th century.Conservation works and clearing of the site were carried out in 1963,and during 2004,a permanent afore planned research and preservation of newly discovered walls continued.

The local population are called "Plum noblemen" or small landed gentry according to the legend about the town defenders: during Tartarian siege the dwellers fed king Bela IV with plums,thus enabling him to survive and scare the enemy away.To show his gratitude the king made them noble.

Špancirfest in Varaždin

I was absent from here last ten days spending my summer holidays with my family and friends..we had also the greatest summer happening that is already a tradition last few years here: the Špancirfest in Varaždin,the "festival of street wanderers".This is a great festive with lot of happenings that all are performed on old streets and squares of Varaždin,one of most baroque cityes in Europe.Old handicrafts,musicinas,dancers,clowns,etno-groups,painters and all kinds of performers from all parts of the world were living here on the streets and squares from the 21th to the 30th August.Ladyes and gentlemans in clothes from past times were walking through the streets that were full of tourists from all Europe.We have also two great concerts this year,the concert of the world known Macedonian musician Kiril Dzajkovski and the famous old US band Creedence Clearwater Revived..
It is hard to say what of hundreds performances was the best one..all were really funny and entertaining but I was in some way most enthusiastic with the simple performance of this pair of young people:the boy was singing and playing the great music fom '80 on his guitar and the girl was making miracles with glass balls..

Varaždin,Ursuline street..in the front of the Ursuline Convent..

The Ursuline sisters bought this house and the church grounds in the middle of 18th century to build a convent and a girls' school marking the beggining of their long educational tradition..

here was also The School for Medical Sisters I finished in 1984.

My grandmother's birthday

Today is the birthday of my grandmother Elizabeta.She was my mother's mother and I loved her very very much.She was born on July 6th 1907 and died in 1976..

She spent her childhood in Budapest in Hungary where she finished her primary school.

Here is her chatolic prayer-book on Hungarian language..

After the primary school she moved to the croatian capitol city Zagreb where she finished a gymnasium and a trade university before she married my grandfather.

Motovun is one of many small towns situated on the top of the hill what is typical for medieval towns in central Istria.

The city wall dates from the 12-13th century..

..and the city gate dates from 15th century.

I spent only one hour there on my way to Umag two weeks ago and here is a few photos I took..

Since 1999, Motovun has hosted the international Motovun Film Festival for independent and avant-garde films from the U.S. and Europe.

Trogir is a historic town and harbour on the Adriatic coast in Croatia and is the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic complex not only in the Adriatic,but in all of Central Europe.

My older daughter Tea visited Trogir during this vikend.There was organised a state competition in knowledge of German language for students of high schools where she took the second place.

Mother's Day

I don't know why but my mother hates to be photographed.Sometimes I try to pick one photo of her when she doesn't know that but it looks she has one sixth sense and always avoids photographing.

She really loves books and reads very much.Here is an old photo of her with a book in the age of fourteen (it must be in 1957).

..and the photo for the identity card from 1960 in her age of seventeen.

She married my father in 1962 and I was born in 1965.Here are my mother and me in December 1966.

And today I AM A REALLY PROUD MOTHER-my older daughter Tea took today morning a second place on the state competition in the knowledge of German language. :)

Here is what my blogfriend Nona of All About Ferrets-The Blog wrote in her todays morning post:

"H.R. 669, the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act
I'm sure all ferret owners in the States must be in a state of total anxiety, wondering if this wretched bill will be passed by Congress.
The American Ferret Association is doing everything it can to prevent ferrets from being listed as one of the animals to be banned so I urge all US ferret owners to check out what the AFA has put on its website and also read the pdf file which advises what you should say to your member of Congress.
Today is the day that the bill is being discussed in Congress and I can only hope and pray that common sense will prevail and ferrets will be considered as domesticated animals, together with dogs and cats.
Surely they can't think otherwise?!?! "

I'm also thinking today on all ferrets and their owners there over in USA.

Ferrets were domesticated here in Europe more than two thausand years ago and they no longer exist in the wild.They cannot even survive in the wild nature.They need people to care about them,to play with them,to live with them.They are not wild animals.

Here are my ferrets Fritzy and Fred on one of our walk exploring old ruins from the romain period in our old town.

One old photo made 1915 in Zagreb..women in my mother line..An old woman sitting in a black dress was my great-great grandmother Albina.She looks so strong on this photo and my family stories tells that she really was.The other are her two daughters and two granddaughters.My great-great grandmother Albina was a teacher.Her daughter,my great-grandmother Adela was a book-keeper,my grandmother Elizabeta was finished a commercial university and her sister Helena was a also a book-keeper.In the times when women were fighting for their rights my family women already had their place..they were educated and employed..they were living their lifes holding their destiny in their own arms.

Here are still so many women in the world who are rightless,oprressed and utilized.I'm standing by their side.

One Heart from America

One beautiful gift hidden in a very beautiful pouch arrived from America to my home yesterday..

It was sent to me from the beautiful lady Constance of Rochambeau ..the Sacred Heart of Milagro..

And here is what Constance wrote in her post:

In the center of the heart resides Mother Earth, keeping us alive.As her children, no matter where we live in the world, it is this life energy we share. Without her gift, we couldn'texist, we depend upon and need her powerto live, just as we need one another!

We have the snow here again..I'm never too much creative in the winter..I'm waiting for the sun and dreaming about the long warm summer days..

Here are few photos I took last summer in the fields of Dugi otok (Long island on the Adriatic sea,Croatia)..hundreds years old olive trees grow there through centuries..hundreds of people have been gathering their fruits..thousands of crickets have been settled in their tops..

The Olive Tree is an evergreen tree or shrub native to the Mediterranean, Asia and parts of Africa. It is short and squat, and rarely exceeds 8–15 meters in height. The silvery green leaves are oblong in shape, measuring 4–10 cm long and 1–3 cm wide. The trunk is typically gnarled and twisted. The small white flowers are borne generally on the last year's wood, in racemes springing from the axils of the leaves. The fruit is a small drupe 1–2.5 cm long, thinner-fleshed and smaller in wild plants than in orchard cultivars. Olives are harvested at the green stage or left to ripen to a rich purple colour (black olive).

A cold february morning on the Drava river..

Drava is a river in southern central Europe, a tributary of the Danube. It begins in Dobbiaco, Italy, and flows east through East Tirol and Carinthia in Austria, into Slovenia,and then southeast, passing through Croatia and forming most of the border between Croatia and Hungary, before it joins the Danube.On its way Drava flows through Varazdin and is only 15 kilometers far from my town,Varazdinske Toplice.Drava is still one clean river where lives fishes,birds,otters and other animals.

I counted about 70 swans today there and some of them have a yellow "necklace" with its own number.There was also one flight of wild ducks,river gulls and few other birds.

And remember,today is the 200th birthday of the great zoologic scientist Charles Darwin.

Today I visited the greatest art event this season here,the exibition of Rembrant's graphics at the Museum for arts and crafts in croatian capitol Zagreb.

It was relly wonderful to see so many original artworks of one of greatest masters.I have seen some of Rembrant's great oil paintings and also a few graphics before.But today I saw for the first time so many of his graphics at one place.I'm impressed!

The exhibition is organised in colaboration with Alte Galerie LMJ in Graz,Austria and you can see all masterworks on the site of the Museum for arts and crafts .
